Union sailor Civil War journal, 1860-1866.

Journal kept by a U.S. Naval Academy graduate while serving as a midshipman on the U.S.S. Congress during the Civil War. He shows Joshua R. Sands as flag officer and L. M. Goldsborough as captain. He states his reasons for entering the U. S. Navy and that his purpose for keeping a journal is to improve his profession and not to record any personal experiences. The journal contains observations and opinions relating to officers and the Naval Academy and its graduates. Also included are digests of lectures (1865-1866) by University of Louisiana law professors, Randell Hunt, Alfred Hennen, C. Roselius, William Hunt and A. Phillips.
